On Sharing from the FP

I’m not a mod here and I don’t want to shit-stir or call anyone out (not that I can tell who shared the FP story). The last couple of days I noticed a few whole stories shared from the FP to here and I’m kind of wondering if this taboo or what; hopefully a mod can chime in. If you want to discuss something on the FP, wouldn’t it make more sense to make a separate post here to become an Oppo discussion thread?

Since many of us are still greyed on the FP ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) and some of us are scared to wander into the world (still me) and others just prefer it over here (me again), I don’t really see the point of sharing whole posts to the FP. I know there are rules about sharing comments and I particularly like it when a funny one gets shared, but that’s a whole different topic.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I hope I didn’t step on anyone’s toes. Be excellent!

Sharing posts from the OP I guess is fine. Jalopnik editors do it all the time, but by sharing it the link will go back to the FP rather than open on Oppositelock.

I think it’s best to create your own post, link the article and it’ll show the thumbnail+ description of the post like how you just posted the Elon Musk post and we can comment here.

I have noticed it too, but Jalopnik is the reason Oppo still exists in the Kinjaverse, so I could see why it would be a non-issue.

No need to share posts from the FP. Most of us are well aware of the site and check it if we want to read it.

Sharing from other (sub)blogs is different though.

Yeah I don’t like that you can’t tell who shared posts anymore only where it’s from. If it’s the editors I guess that works but it just seems odd.

Not everyone reads the OP though. Many people come straight to Oppo and now that the link is completely removed from the Kinja drop down people have less of a reason to from the FP to Oppo.

The editors know that many people come straight to Oppo and don’t bother with the FP. I mean seriously how many times has someone come on here to post something that was on the FP a week ago because they never went and saw it.

Like I bet you sometime next week someone is going to post “Scion is dead!?”. Just like for about a month people were coming here and asking “What happened to Oppo?! Why is it now .kinja.com and not .jalopnik.com?!”

Fair enough, but I think some of those people take breaks from Oppo too, unless the rest of us addicts...

Just as a point of disclosure, Patrick George is technically a “mod” here, in the sense that he has admin powers but to my knowledge doesn’t mess with whats going on here at all. I’m not a huge fan of the FP sharing on a regular basis but thats more because I’ve noticed a sharp decline in featuring Oppo content to the FP...maybe its a balancing act I don’t know. In any case, oppo can vote with its views. Also, just so we are all clear - any oppo author can unshare anything shared to oppo.

“What happened to Oppo?! Why is it now .kinja.com and not .jalopnik.com?!”

New Gawker changes separated the reader-generated sub-blogs from the main pages. So Oppo is really just a Kinja blog...with a lot of authors.

Yeah pretty much. I had a feeling it would happen eventually since there were already tons of .kinja.com sub blogs already. If anything it’s better this way because we get less morons from the FP wandering over here and stirring up trouble.

Oppo users can unshare stuff other people post?

if its shared content, yes. I’m not condoning unsharing all the things, and I am SPECIFICALLY calling for restraint on unsharing stuff you personally don’t like or people you don’t like just to spite them. We expect oppo users to behave like the adults we all hope you can be.

It is a weird situation, but I do like that many of the paid authors contribute here from time to time.

On unsharing, I am generally against doing that unless some one shared something blatantly against our code of excellence (i.e. nudity).

yeah, I only unshare content on rare occasions as mentioned (or violating the “sharing is caring” policy)
